Equipment-specific Policies

While the University is in the Guarded Risk Posture, we are happy to be able to offer to manufacture your designs for you using Open Lab equipment. Please read the following information carefully before requesting service:

  • You must be Pitt faculty, staff, or student.
  • If you are not submitting this request as a course instructor or TA, you must pass the required training modules on Open Lab @ Canvas before submission.
  • You must submit your design to us in our requested format.
  • Submissions will be completed on a first-come, first-served basis. Course- and research-related requests will be prioritized over personal projects.
  • If we have questions or need you to make a decision, we will contact you by email. It is important that you reply as quickly as possible, as our staff schedules are limited.
  • We cannot promise perfection; making is often a trial and error process.
  • We cannot promise to finish your project by your deadline, but we will try. Submit as early as possible to increase your chances.
  • When we have completed your product, we will notify you by email and place it in the cabinet in front of Open Lab @ Hillman (G-7 Hillman Library) for contactless pickup. This is not a secure location, so please pick up as soon as you can after you are notified that your product is ready for pickup.
  • If Pitt returns to the Elevated or High Risk Postures, we will have to stop work on all projects in process, possibly with no advance notice.
  • As soon as the pandemic has passed and it is safe for us to reopen our doors, we will return to our policy of not making it for you but teaching you how to make it yourself.
  • Read the equipment-specific policy below to submit a manufacturing request:
  • You must set up your design for slicing in Cura for the Ultimaker 3, complete with all printer settings. Instead of hitting the Slice button, instead save the file in Cura as a .3MF file for submission to us. This will allow us to modify settings if we need to.
  • You may request a color (or two colors, for a dual extrusion design) and we will do our best, but we cannot promise to provide that color.
  • If the print fails in a way that is the fault of the printer, we will rerun it. If the print fails in a way that has to do with the design or the slicing settings, we will return it to you to troubleshoot before resubmitting.
  • Students must pass the 3D Printing with Ultimaker 3 and S5 module and the Preparing your digital 3D model for 3D printing on a filament printer – Ultimaker Cura module on Open Lab @ Canvas before submission. These modules have prerequisite module(s) on OL@C.

Submit your manufacturing request through our Open Lab Project Submission Form.

  • You must submit your design, ready-to-laser, as a .AI file. .PDF also accepted but not recommended.
  • All raster images in your file must be embedded, not linked (otherwise they will not open on our computer).
  • All text must be converted to outlines if you want to ensure that we will not substitute a different font.
  • We cannot promise to have your desired color of acrylic in stock.
  • You must include the appropriate starting laser settings for your design and your material for our 50W Epilog Zing on the submission form.
  • Students must pass the Using the Epilog Zing for Laser Cutting and Engraving module on Open Lab @ Canvas before submission. The Adobe Illustrator Design for Laser Cutting and Engraving module is strongly recommended. These modules have prerequisite module(s) on OL@C.

  • You must submit your design, ready-to-cut, as a .STUDIO or .STUDIO3 file for Silhouette Studio.
  • We cannot promise to have your desired color of vinyl in stock.
  • If you need a design cut on more than one color or type of material, submit each type/color separately with a separate design file.
  • You must choose your desired material based on this flowchart:
