Teaching Survey Checklist for Faculty: Surveys Open April 1-21

With Pitt’s end-of-term teaching survey period underway, here’s a quick checklist to help you increase response rates and generate as much meaningful student feedback as possible.

  1. First, verify that a survey is scheduled for your class. You can do this by going to the teaching survey dashboard.
  2. Next, make sure you encourage students to respond to their surveys.
    • You can discuss with students the importance of their feedback and how it’s used.
    • Also, provide your students with samples of effective feedback. Ask them to be specific in their comments and provide examples. (The University of Michigan provides a nice guide for students.)
  3. Make sure you promote survey links and announcements in Canvas as well.
  4. Faculty can create a unique QR code to include in personal reminders and announcements.
  5. Dedicating class time has been one of the most proven and effective strategies for boosting student response rates, so make sure you set aside time.

If you’d like to learn more about collecting and using feedback throughout the term, we have more information on our website. You may also contact the Office of Measurement and Evaluation of Teaching (OMET) with questions or for more information.
