The School of Computing and Information has embarked upon an ambitious redesign of our MLIS curricula. We are temporarily pausing admissions to the existing MLIS program until the Fall of 2018. The target date for launching a redesigned program with the first group of new students is Fall 2019. We anticipate beginning to accept applications for the redesigned program in Fall of 2018. Stay tuned!

The University of Pittsburgh is nationally-recognized for the quality of its graduate professional programs. Through Pitt Online, those same high quality programs are being made available to qualified individuals without regard to geography, providing you with the same foundational knowledge and practical skills as our ALA-accredited on-campus MLIS degree program.

The online Master of Library and Information Science program is a 12-course, 36-credit program that can be completed online within two years of part-time study. There are four required core courses; the remaining eight courses are tailored to your career goals.

The course of study calls for each student to take several core courses that provide the foundational knowledge upon which subsequent courses build. These core courses offer students the opportunity to gain competency in organizing, retrieving, and managing information, as well as familiarity with various technologies used in libraries and a wide range of venues such as corporations, banks, non—profits, academic institutions, and data centers. With the advice of an advisor, students can select elective courses that meet their specific academic and professional needs.
