CGS Online Exams

The University of Pittsburgh is partnered with the College of General Studies in the administration of exams for their online asynchronous courses. These specific courses may elect to have their exams proctored, and therefore any students in the Pittsburgh area will be required to take their exams in the University of Pittsburgh Testing Center.

Information for CGS Online Instructors:

If you wish to have your exams proctored in the Testing Center, you must send an email to tests@pitt.edu before the end of the 3rd week of classes (Friday, Jan. 26) to begin setting this up. We will need the following information:

  • Your Course Name and Course Number (i.e. Applied College Algebra MATH 0025-7510).
  • How many students enrolled in your course.
  • Date ranges for all exams during the semester.

Once we have this initial information, we will then work with you set everything up! There are a few things to keep in mind regarding the use of the Testing Center for exams:

  • Students do not need to make an appointment to take an exam for your course if they take it during our normal operating hours.
    • Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. All testing must be finished and submitted by 4:50 p.m.
  • We have Saturday appointments available from noon–4 p.m. All testing must be finished and submitted by 3:50 p.m. If a student wishes to schedule a Saturday appointment, they must do so before the end of the day on Wednesday before the desired Saturday.
  • We must receive all exam information the week before the exam is to be administered. This includes sending us a hard copy of the exam, which will be used in the event of unforeseen technical issues that prevent the use of Canvas in the Testing Center.
  • If you have students enrolled in your course that are not in the Pittsburgh area, please alert them of the requirement that your exams must be proctored. These students should visit our Off-Campus Testing webpage to browse some proctoring options in their area. If none of the locations on our pre-approved proctor list meets your students’ needs, please advise them to look around their area for a local testing center, university/college, or public library that would be willing to proctor their exams. Students must submit the Testing Site Selection Form on our website once they have contacted a potential proctor. If you wish to make alternative arrangements with students directly, that is perfectly acceptable.
  • According to university guidelines, there are to be no Saturday Finals scheduled during Finals Week. All Final Exams must be completed by the end of the day on Friday of Finals Week.
  • Most online asynchronous course exams are administered through Canvas. The Testing Center utilizes a Respondus LockDown Browser for all Canvas exams so that students cannot freely roam to any website/program outside of the exam. However, if an exam is to be administered as a paper/pencil exam, we can do so. Simply let us know this information when you reach out to the Testing Center.
  • If you are not sure if your course qualifies for this service, please reach out to the CGS Office for more information.

Information for CGS Online Students:

Students who are enrolled in CGS Online courses that will be required to take their exams in the Testing Center can walk-in to the Testing Center at any time during our normal hours of operation.
