How to Cross-list Your Canvas Course Sections

How to Cross-list Your Canvas Course Sections

What are Cross-lists?

Are you teaching the same course to students who register for it under different departments, course numbers or section numbers?  Would you prefer to maintain the online content in a single Canvas course shell for all of your students?  This can be achieved by “cross-listing” your courses in Canvas (also called “course merging”).

When a cross-list is performed for you,  all of the students in sections that you specify as “child” courses are placed into the course you specify as the “parent” course. For your students, this means that they will see the name of the “parent” course when they log in to Canvas. Students may create course nicknames on their Dashboard to make it easier for them to recognize the course their section has been cross-listed into. For instructors, you will see all enrollments for all child course sections present now in your parent course and will be able to do things such as give each section a different due date for assignments, or send announcements to a single section only.

This process has no bearing on what courses students are registered for officially and will not change your courses or rosters in your Faculty Center.

How do I Cross-list?

  • You may submit a request for a course cross-list by filling out this form.
  • The Pitt IT 24/7 support staff can also cross-list your courses for you. You can call, chat, or submit a ticket with the Pitt IT Help Desk.
  • In order to make the request go smoothly, please have the following ready:
    • The ID of the course you would like to be the “parent,” including the term code and section number (e.g. 2204 ANTH 0101 SEC1000).
    • The ID of the course(s) you would like to be the “child” course(s), including the term code and section numbers
    • Your user name and role in the course
  • Be sure that you are listed as a teacher in all the courses, or your request will be denied.

If you have questions about cross-listing, or if you believe your request might be problematic due to your status in the courses (e.g. you are enrolled as instructor in the “parent” course but are not enrolled as instructor in the “child” course), please contact edtech@teaching.pitt.edu to discuss your case.
