Hardware for Video: What Should I Use and Where Can I Get It?

What sort of hardware do I need for my video project?

Camera

Do you need to record footage that is not a screencast (a recording of your computer or device’s screen)? If so, you’ll need a camera or camcorder of some sort.

Can I record using my smartphone camera?

You should be able to record good video with the equipment you have. Smartphones are one of the most accessible video cameras available.

Lighting

If you’re using a camera, you need good lighting. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need studio lights.

Microphone

Do you need to record audio? For example, your voice as you talk, or ambient noises? If so, you’ll need a microphone of some sort.

  • Does your camera, computer, or smartphone already have a microphone? Test it out! If you can produce an audio recording that is loud enough to be comfortable to listen to on multiple devices, clear enough to easily understand speech, and doesn’t pick up too much background noise, you may be all set!

Tripod

Stability of camera, microphone, and lights are all key to video quality. You may be able to achieve a good angle by propping these pieces of equipment on stable surfaces where you are recording. But if not, tripods will let you position your equipment just where you need it. Try to avoid holding this equipment by hand when possible, as bumpiness makes for a video that doesn’t look or sound professional or even that is uncomfortable to watch.

Where can I rent/borrow video hardware on Pitt’s Pittsburgh campus?

What if you need a camera, lights, microphone, or tripod(s) other than what you already have on hand?

Where can I record?

In many cases, you can record your video or audio in any quiet place where you can find or set up a background that looks the way you want it to. However, there are also a few good options on campus. Some of them come with hardware and software; in others, you will need to bring your own.
