Create Pre-Assigned Breakout Rooms in Zoom

Create Pre-Assigned Breakout Rooms In Zoom

You can create pre-assigned breakout rooms manually in Zoom. However, this portion of Zoom is not exposed to Canvas. You’ll need to use the systems in conjunction with one another for this.

1. Create the meeting(s) in the Canvas Zoom integration as normal.

2. Go to the University of Pittsburgh Zoom landing page and sign in with your Pitt credentials.

3. Find the meeting(s) to edit, click on their title/topic to open it.

4. Click “Edit This Meeting” at the bottom.

5. Add the “breakout room pre-assign” check and follow the directions for Pre-assigning participants to breakout rooms.

6. Make sure you’re using their Pitt username in the form of abc123@pitt.edu. You can see their username from the People page in Canvas.

7. Make sure your meeting also has “only authenticated users can join” and that you inform your students they need to be logged in to Canvas with their Pitt account (refer them to “Creating your University Zoom Account” section on Pitt IT’s Zoom Videoconferencing page). If they don’t do this, they may not be logged into Zoom in a way that it can identify them to put them into the right room.

8. Save the meeting.

If you are still having trouble, please email us at edtech@pitt.edu.
