The Masters of Science in Nursing Informatics blends aspects of cognitive science, computer science, information science, and nursing science, with the ability to develop, analyze, and evaluate information systems augmented by technology to support and enhance the management of patient care.

Informatics nurses are high-tech specialists that facilitate the convergence between technical staff and clinicians. Career opportunities for graduates of this specialty are numerous and span from hospitals to consulting firms. The job market for Informatics nurses is one of the leading areas of growth according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Pitt’s Nursing Informatics concentration stresses the development of leadership in nursing by learning the management and processing of data to create information and develop knowledge. There are three different options in Nursing Informatics; a major, a minor, and post-masters certificate. All may be completed on a full or part-time basis.

Graduates of this area of concentration are eligible for the Nursing Informatics Certification Exam, offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and prepared for the theoretical components of the Certified Associate in Health Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS) or Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS), offered by Healthcare Information and Management Systems (HIMMS). (Note: Visit the ANCC and HIMSS websites for eligibility requirements.)

Additionally, graduates are enjoying meaningful employment in a variety of positions such as Medical Informatics Coordinator, Systems Analyst, Senior Consultant Project Manager, Director, EHR Support, Informatics Nurse, Applications Manager, Clinical Solutions Specialist, and many more.
