Important Announcement from the ETS Regarding Blackboard Upgrades
The Blackboard upgrade is scheduled to begin the day after final grades are posted to the PeopleSoft system, on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 6:00 AM. We intend for service to be restored about 48 hours later. Please see our webpage for details and join our mailing list for updates.
Information About Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys
Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys are underway and will be available until April 19. Some strategies to increase response rates include: talking to students about the survey process; reminding students often and emphatically to complete the surveys; and setting aside class time for students to take the survey.
To see how other Pitt Faculty have successfully attained higher-than-average response rates, read these instructor suggestions on the topic of strategies for enhanced participation.

Teaching Tip: Responding to Student Writing
Try adopting Richard Haswell’s strategy of “minimal marking.” Rather than mark and/or correct all writing errors (e.g. grammar, spelling, etc.), withhold or lower a grade until the students revises, re-edits, and resubmits the paper for a fresh read. This approach encourages students to develop their own mental procedures for finding and correcting errors. Furthermore, focus feedback on how to improve writing for clarity and coherence. This approach promotes revision, rather than the perception that editing is the only improvement needed.
